Pictures from Welsh Championships 2013 at Rhondda

Owain Roberts from Cerrigydrudion with his winning colored potatoes NVS Amour also considered the ‘Best Dish’ in show. They were the longest Amour I have seen staged and even though they were from us, I never got mine to be that shape.

Owian Roberts certianly had a good show at the Welsh as he also won the Short carrot class with Sweet Candle.

John Glyn Jones from Caeathro near Caernarfon can certianly grow some fantastic celery with this year probably being one of best apart from one show where he missed out.

Don has won this class for3 large onions 3 under 250grams 6 shallots large and 9 pickling many times. Don now has a different way of growing his shallots, he doesn’t bother potting them up any more, they are all planted directly outdoors during early November. They are grown in the same location every year which is behind his Polytunnel with the bed being prepared during September with 4 ounces of Fish Blood and Bone incorporated into the soil and a further 2 ounces raked in during early Spring. Once the shallots are planted the soil is heaped up around them with his hands and they’re then left to their own devices until they are lifted for the pickling class during mid May. The whole clump is lifted at this time which may well have as many as eight young shallots on. The clump is then allowed to dry and any that have flat sides on them will swell out as the foliage dies back. the larger shallots are left to grow in the bed and this year, with four specimens on each clump, the clumps were lifted during early June.

DSC02125Jim Thompson is becoming a specialist at collections and this display of six kinds was really good. The Parsnips were Polar, sadly no longer available as it was a very early variety with lovely skin and would bulk up quickly. Shame we no longer have it.

Peter Devonald won the class for four onions under 250 grms with the variety Toughball. Peter certainly had some good ones this year winning quite a few shows with them. The seed were sown after he got home from my MAsterclass Weekend in November last year.

Another really great show as we have become accustomed to seeing.  Well done the Welsh Branch Committee for organising it so well and in particular Mary Thomas the Secretary for all her committemnt and drive, always with a smile, well done Mary.
